Celebrities Go All-In on Gun Control, Reasonable People Want More Focus on Mental Health

Tennessee – The deadly shooting at the Covenant School in Nashville has spurred calls for stricter gun laws in Tennessee. Music artists Sheryl Crow and Amy Grant, along with the anti-gun organization Voices for a Safer Tennessee, are pushing for an extreme risk protection law, aka red-flag laws, to remove firearms from Americans, as well as laws requiring the “safe” storage of firearms.

Sheryl Crow and Amy Grant, both based in Nashville, have called on lawmakers and Governor Bill Lee to enact “serious” reforms following the deadly Covenant School shooting. The musicians are part of a radical coalition in Tennessee that is pushing for the enactment of extreme risk protection laws to remove firearms without due process. After leaving the governor’s office, Crow and Grant told NewsChannel 5 Investigates that they just wanted to see something that everyone could agree on. The two musicians are hopeful their emotionally charged appeals can make that happen, despite divisive issues.

The Republican-controlled legislature’s proposed laws are unlikely to include extreme risk protection orders or laws imposing penalties for gun owners who leave their weapons unsecured in their cars or homes. House Democratic Caucus Chair John Ray Clemmons would like to see a bill that requires support from both Republicans and Democrats to pass, adding that he wants a strong bill, which is likely NOT something that the entire Republican caucus can vote for.

The shooting at the private Christian elementary school in Nashville, in which six people were killed, has increased calls for stricter gun laws. The transgender shooter had mental health issues and had attended the school as a child. Republican lawmakers have come under far-left pressure to …just “do something” to prevent similar incidents from happening.

The debate on gun control and the right to bear arms in the U.S. drags on. Proponents of fewer gun laws argue correctly that the Second Amendment guarantees the right to bear arms, and that any attempt to limit this right through existing or additional gun laws is a violation of individual liberties. Patriots also understand that criminals will find ways to obtain guns regardless of the laws in place and that law-abiding citizens should not be penalized for the actions of a few bad actors. Instead, they advocate for enforcing existing laws and focusing on mental health to reduce so-called ‘gun violence’.

‘Gun Violence’ or Mental Health Violence

Everyone should be able to agree that mental health efforts are crucial to addressing the root causes of mental health violence. Mental illness is a documented factor in mass shootings, and providing better access to mental health services and resources could prevent these tragedies from occurring. Additionally, mental health issues can lead to suicide, which accounts for two-thirds of gun deaths in the United States. By addressing mental health concerns, we can reduce mental health violence and improve individuals’ overall well-being.

The debate on gun control and the Second Amendment continues to be a contentious issue in the US. While some argue for fewer gun laws and increased mental health efforts, others call for stricter gun laws and better regulation. Ultimately, the goal should be to balance protecting individual liberties and ensuring public safety while lawfully respecting the Second Amendment.
