Opinion

Virginia gun owners, take notice—Abigail Spanberger is not your average Democrat. She is the former CIA agent-turned-Congresswoman who’s now running to be Virginia’s next governor, and she’s bringing with her the most aggressive, well-funded anti-gun agenda in the state’s modern history.
Despite her carefully polished image as a moderate, Spanberger’s actions—and promises—reveal her to be one of the most extreme anti-gun candidates ever to seek Virginia’s highest office. From public rallies with Moms Demand Action to her enthusiastic support of California-style gun bans, Spanberger has made it clear: if elected governor, she will sign into law a sweeping slate of gun control measures that would strip law-abiding Virginians of their constitutional rights.
A Candidate Backed by Everytown, Not Everyday Virginians
Spanberger’s ties to the national gun control machine are no secret. She’s a former volunteer for Moms Demand Action, an affiliate of Everytown for Gun Safety, the Michael Bloomberg-funded group that has poured millions into turning red states blue. In fact, Everytown has already pledged $1 million to help elect her—an investment that comes with strings attached.
In their own words, Everytown’s president, John Feinblatt, said Spanberger “has a long record of fighting tooth and nail” for gun control. And Angela Ferrell-Zabala, executive director of Moms Demand Action, called her “the leader this moment demands.” Translation? Spanberger is their Trojan horse to ram through bans, restrictions, and licensing schemes that threaten the rights of millions of gun owners in the Commonwealth.
For the sake of Virginia’s children, I’ll sign legislation to keep Virginians safe.https://t.co/D0FuvjhUcs

A Full Agenda of Anti-Gun Extremism
Spanberger has promised to sign nearly every major gun control bill that Gov. Glenn Youngkin has vetoed—bills that would radically transform Virginia’s legal landscape. Among the most dangerous proposals she supports:
- A sweeping ban on so-called “assault weapons”—language used to demonize America’s most popular rifles like the AR-15. Spanberger co-sponsored a similar ban in Congress and reaffirmed in a recent interview: “I am totally on the record.”
- Prohibitions on standard-capacity magazines, the very tools that responsible gun owners use for home defense and training.
- A permit-to-purchase system, requiring law-abiding Virginians to ask the state for permission before exercising their rights.
- A ban on “ghost guns”, targeting hobbyists and home builders, while doing nothing to stop crime.
- A five-day waiting period on all gun purchases, treating every would-be gun buyer like a criminal on probation.
- Criminal penalties for leaving a firearm accessible—even inside your own home—if minors or “prohibited persons” might be present.
These aren’t just a few “common-sense measures.” It’s a full-fledged attempt to make Virginia look more like California, New York, and New Jersey—states where the Second Amendment is little more than a memory.
Spanberger’s False Badge of Moderation
Spanberger likes to invoke her time as a federal agent and the daughter of a law enforcement officer to claim credibility on “gun safety.” But actions speak louder than résumés. Her entire political career has been one long alliance with anti-gun activists.
She told supporters she carried a firearm while serving in federal law enforcement—but now seeks to deny ordinary Virginians access to the very tools she once relied on. She claims her family practiced “responsible gun ownership,” but supports laws that would make gun ownership itself a bureaucratic nightmare.
There is no gun control law that Abigail Spanberger has opposed. None. From universal background checks and red flag laws to outright bans and mandatory permits, she’s embraced it all.
The Clear Alternative: Winsome Earle-Sears
Spanberger’s opponent, Republican Winsome Earle-Sears, is the firewall standing between gun owners and a total overhaul of Virginia’s firearms laws. A Marine veteran and unapologetic defender of the Second Amendment, Earle-Sears has vowed to protect gun rights and has voiced support for Constitutional Carry—a bold step toward restoring the right to carry without government permission.
With Republicans just a few seats away from retaking the General Assembly, Earle-Sears could be the difference between a gun-free dystopia and a return to freedom and personal responsibility.
What’s at Stake
Virginia has long stood as a battleground state for gun rights. In 2020, Democrats passed several restrictive laws, only to be met with a wave of resistance from local governments and voters. Since then, Gov. Youngkin has vetoed dozens of anti-gun bills—but his term ends soon. If Spanberger takes the reins with Democrats still in control of the legislature, a deluge of bans, mandates, and criminal penalties will hit gun owners like a tidal wave.
Don’t let the polished speeches fool you. Spanberger is no moderate. She is the embodiment of the national gun control lobby’s endgame—and if she’s elected, it won’t just be AR-15s on the chopping block. It will be your ability to defend your home, your family, and your freedom.
Gun owners in Virginia must get organized, speak out, and most importantly—vote. The right to keep and bear arms is not up for negotiation, and neither is your liberty.
