New York City/United States – -(AmmoLand.com)- The big loss Letitia James had this week is a decisive win for every pro-Second Amendment group in the United States, and Second Amendment supporters have the NRA to thank for their continued existence.
As has been said elsewhere, the NRA’s survival was crucial for multiple reasons. If the NRA was wiped out, anti-Second Amendment attorneys general would have had a blueprint to wipe out just about any pro-Second Amendment organization – or even pro-Second Amendment media outlets like Ammoland – courtesy of the Cuomo-James-Hochul regime.
With the ruling by Judge Cohen, the dissolution of the NRA (James’s true objective) is off the table for the foreseeable future. No matter your opinion of the NRA and/or Wayne LaPierre, that is a good thing. What the Cuomo-James regime was trying to do was to degrade the ability of Second Amendment supporters to make their case to the American people, with an eye towards the eventual destruction of said ability.
After destroying the ability of Second Amendment supporters to make their case to the American people, what do you think would have happened to the Second Amendment? I’d suggest a look at Australia or the United Kingdom for likely end states.
That was clear in the letters sent to banks and insurance companies in 2018 when New York’s Department of Financial Services used the phrase “similar gun promotion organizations.” Exactly how would they define a “gun promotion organization?” They didn’t say in the letters, but we get the context from the URLs.
Note that those letters include the term “gun manufacturers.” Now, loyal Ammoland readers, indulge me for a moment.
If gun manufacturers are denied services by banks and other financial service companies, how much of our Second Amendment rights can we really exercise? How can Second Amendment advocacy take place when banks and insurance companies are told that doing business with pro-Second Amendment organizations could open them up to retaliation from those charged with enforcing financial regulations?
The fact of the matter is that while winning court victories like NYSPRA v. Bruen and passing pro-Second Amendment legislation are good things, they may not be the most important battles Second Amendment supporters will fight. It may be far more important to address financial deplatforming and to also make other reforms to prevent the abuse that New York has carried out.
This is going to require hard work on the part of Second Amendment supporters from now until November, both in primary elections and in the November 8 general election. The best defense against abuses like those Letitia James has carried out is to defeat anti-Second Amendment extremists via the ballot box at the federal, state, and local level.
