MT. VERNON, NEW YORK-(Ammoland.com)- In the act of civil disobedience, Rob Pincus of I.C.E. Training started up his training classes again at one of the closest ranges to New York City with newly developed novel coronavirus (COVID-19) protocols.

Pincus consulted with experts from Health and Human Services when he developed his protocols. According to him, one of the foremost experts in response to COVID-19 is his friend and signed off on the class protocols.

Pincus and the students practiced social distancing, wore masks, had hand sanitizer on hand, and Pincus wore gloves. Anytime Pincus came in contact with a student, he would change his set of gloves. Also, shooting ranges have ventilation systems designed to remove heavy metals from the air. These multi-million-dollar systems are uniquely equipped to deal with viruses like COVID-19. In theory, any virus particles should be picked up and filtered by the units.

Pincus also decided to avoid demonstrating techniques and tactics with his student’s firearms. During his typical class, he would use the student’s handguns to teach his pupils. He reasoned that by changing this small part of the training, it would cut down on the chances of transmitting the COVID-19 virus.

None of the students at the class were showing symptoms of COVID-19. Doctors think a large percentage of people infected with coronavirus are asymptomatic. The training attendees knew that this could be the case. The trainer’s students understood that the rules put into place did not totally nullify the risk of the transmission of the virus. Still, they felt the protocols that Pincus put into were adequate to mitigate the chances of contracting the coronavirus.

Pioneer Shooting Center in Mt Vernon, NY, hosted the first two classes. The range is located just outside New York City. The state of New York is still under a stay at home order, and indoor ranges are still closed because of COVID-19. There was a real threat that the state could have shut down the training and the range for violating the order. The shooting center decided to take a stand against Governor Cuomo’s unconstitutional ruling. Luckily the police didn’t show up at the center to enforce the state’s shutdown order.

Pioneer Shooting Center is one of the closest ranges to New York City. The range offers a full selection of classes and host training events throughout the year. The range has been shut down by the state since the beginning of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Some gun rights advocates believe that anti-gun governors across the country have used the outbreak as an excuse to shut down ranges and gun stores. Multiple lawsuits are taking place around the country.

Pincus believes that these classes are an act of civil disobedience. He and his students realize that the state could serve them with subpoenas for violating the Governor’s order. To them, it is about more than taking a class. It is about standing up to what they see as a violation of their rights. They believe they are making a public stand against an overbearing government.

“I’m definitely proud and appreciative of the students who showed up today… law enforcement, civilians, people with N.Y. carry permits, medical personnel, and the range staff,” Pincus told AmmoLand. “Some are alumni from previous classes with me…. all of them realize they could end up getting coronavirus or a subpoena. All of them knew what they were getting into and thought it was important. The two sessions were experiments in how to run a course with corona considerations as they were training classes for the students. We are going to share these protocols and propose them as ‘best practices’ from instructors running indoor ranges moving forward in regard to coronavirus response.”
