NJ Gov. Murphy Pushing More Gun Control in “Lame Duck” Session

U.S.A. -(AmmoLand.com)- Gov. Phil Murphy was joined this morning by Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin to announce yet another assault on New Jersey gun owners.  Having barely survived in deep Blue New Jersey, the Governor is reverting back to an old playbook to divert attention from the real issues that have voters in the Garden State so angry in the first place.  Rather than tackle real problems like that state’s highest-in-the-country property taxes, Murphy is looking to change the subject.  This morning’s media spectacle was simply a retread of an event he held last spring.

The state’s two most powerful gun-grabbers broadly defined their package of bills which includes:

    • Banning .50 Caliber Firearms (S.103/A.1280).
    • Gun registration for residents moving into New Jersey (A.3686/S.372)
    • Ammunition Registration (A.1292/S.1481)
    • Microstamping (S.112/A.1098)

Other issues were discussed and included regulating school shooting drills, gun manufacturer liability and mandatory training to simply own a firearm (renewable every four years).

Incredibly, the Governor touted New Jersey’s tough, existing gun laws.  In the same breath, he stated that there have been 782 shootings, 1004 victims, and 180 fatalities since April 15.  This is the Governor’s definition of success, calling the state a “leader” in gun safety!  While the state’s gun control laws are some of the toughest in the country, they have been an utter disaster and his own numbers reveal that.  However, that did not dissuade him from calling for more of the same.  This probably explains why he narrowly won re-election despite his party having a one million voter registration advantage.  The Speaker is looking for his own diversion to distract from presiding over historic losses for his caucus.  Today, these tone-deaf politicians doubled down on failure. History has proven that New Jersey gun laws which only target law-abiding gun owners and do nothing to crack down on criminals mean that the streets of Camden, Trenton, Newark, and Paterson will be just as dangerous tomorrow as they were yesterday.  This is nothing more than rhetoric designed to be a diversion from failed leadership.

Committee hearings have not been scheduled on this legislative package; however, the Speaker has agreed to push the Governor’s agenda during the “lame duck” session which will take place this month.  These bills could be scheduled at any time.  It is important that you take action today!

Please contact your Assembly members, and respectfully request that they oppose all of these measures and any new gun control.  November demonstrated that participation matters!  We need EVERY NRA member to make their voice heard today.

Fake News CNN Claims 641 Mass Shootings in 2021 – Wait What? Almost Two Per Day!?

Fake News Alarm
Fake News CNN Claims 641 Mass Shootings in 2021 – Wait What? Almost Two Per Day!? iStock

USA – -(AmmoLand.com)- In an online story published Friday CNN admits they used data from the debunked Gun Violence Archive to claim there have been 641 mass shootings in the United States during 2021 – an average of 1.94 mass shootings per day.

Think about that – nearly two mass shootings per day. I’m surprised the legacy media had time to cover anything else, such as COVID, Joe Biden’s daily foibles or the tanking economy since their news crews must have been running from one mass shooting to another every single day, right?

CNN publicly stated they used the Gun Violence Archive’s flawed data:

“The Gun Violence Archive, a non-profit based in Washington, DC and which CNN relies on for its reporting of mass shootings, defines a mass shooting as an incident leaving at least four people dead or injured, excluding the shooter, and does not differentiate victims based upon the circumstances in which they were shot,” the authors admit.

“They counted as many as 417 mass shootings in 2019. And this year, 641 incidents have been recorded.”

The authors actually admit relying upon the GVA for “reporting of mass shootings.” Relying upon the GVA for any news story is toxic. We debunked the Gun Violence Archive in July, in a special report titled: “The Gun Violence Archive and its Scaring of America.”

The GVA is a small nonprofit that was founded in 2013 by Michael Klein, a left-leaning philanthropist and open-government advocate, and Mark Bryant, a retired computer analyst, and GVA’s current executive director.

Gun Violence Archive executive director Mark Bryant. (photo courtesy Mark Bryant.)

The problem is how Bryant and his 20 staffers define mass shootings. When most people hear the term “mass shooting,” they picture a crazed gunman stalking the halls of a school or a shopping mall, coldly and randomly executing innocent young victims. What does not come to mind are rival drug crews shooting it out in Chicago or Detroit, or a madman murdering his entire family, which no sane person would consider a mass shooting. The GVA makes no such distinction. If four people are wounded, the GVA labels it a mass shooting regardless of the circumstances, and the media and anti-gun politicians lap up the GVA’s inflated stats.

According to Bryant’s all-inclusive definition, there were 417 mass shootings in 2019.

The FBI says there were 30, because it uses a much narrower and more realistic definition.

You decide which figure is more accurate and more honest.

CNN isn’t the only organization to be hoodwinked by the inflated GVA stats. The Biden/Harris administration has cited GVA’s data, as have a bevy of other elected officials and political candidates, at the local, state, and federal levels. The New York Times, National Public Radio, USA TODAY, and a host of other media outlets also use GVA’s definition when reporting about mass shootings, because the bigger and scarier the number, the more clicks the story will receive.

When I interviewed Bryant in July for our special report, I asked him if he actually believed that the average news consumer even considers domestic violence or gang warfare when they hear the term mass shooting.

Bryant replied, “I don’t know. I know what we want to do is provide numbers and let the journalists, advocates, and ‘congress critters’ look at the data, glean details and drill down on it.”

Unfortunately, today’s legacy journalists and anti-rights politicians are too lazy to do any drilling down. They prefer to cut and paste Bryan’s off-the-charts stats.

The bottom line: Bryant and his GVA know full well they’re supplying flawed data, which the media treats as gospel. I’m guessing Bryant and his anti-gun pals are laughing about it, too.

Ninth Circuit Salvages CA Magazine Ban

NRA Gavel American Flag
Earlier this week, the Ninth Circuit upheld California’s ban against “large-capacity magazines.” IMG NRA-ILA

U.S.A. -(AmmoLand.com)- Earlier this week, the Ninth Circuit upheld California’s ban against “large-capacity magazines.” This decision reverses previous rulings at both the district and circuit court levels concluding the ban was unconstitutional.

NRA-ILA backed the challenge California Penal Code §32310, which effectively bans Californians from possessing magazines capable of holding more than ten rounds. Criminals, by definition, ignore the ban altogether.

Today, the Ninth Circuit ignored Supreme Court precedents to extend its streak of anti-Second Amendment rulings. As Judge VanDyke described in a forceful dissent: “now, in the nine Western states covered by our court, the right to ‘keep and bear arms’ means, at most, you might get to possess one janky handgun and 2.2 rounds of ammunition, and only in your home under lock and key. That’s it. That’s ridiculous, and so I must respectfully dissent.”

While this decision is certain to disappoint America’s gun owners, NRA-ILA and its counsel at Kirkland & Ellis remain determined to correct this judicial error. Supporters of the Second Amendment can receive updates about this critical effort here and can join the fight directly here.

This case is captioned Duncan v. Bonta. It was previously titled Duncan v. Becerra, but the caption was changed when the Attorney General of California was replaced.

Please stay tuned to www.nraila.org for future updates on this and all of NRA-ILA’s efforts to defend your constitutional rights.

Murphy’s Slander Should Be Slammed

Senator Chris Murphy
Senator Chris Murphy

United States – -(AmmoLand.com)-There is nothing more predictable than the fact that anti-Second Amendment extremists will race to the nearest microphone to exploit a shooting at a school like the one at Oxford High School in Michigan recently.

Nor is it a surprise when someone like Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) unleashes slanders aimed at Second Amendment supporters that would, in a past age, lead those smeared to seek recourse via the code duello. It must mean that a tragic event happened on a day ending with the letter Y. Furthermore, he is seeking to exploit the unimaginable and incomprehensible grief of the families of the victims.

First of all, let’s make one thing clear: Murphy’s desired agenda that he seeks to have enacted is nothing less than the infliction of injustice on tens of millions of Americans by punishing them via the infringement of their Second Amendment for a series of horrific crimes and/or acts of madness they did not commit.

Second of all, what must also be clear is that when Second Amendment supporters exercise their First Amendment rights to oppose efforts like those from Chris Murphy, they are doing nothing wrong. Murphy’s sick insinuation that those who oppose his anti-Second Amendment extremism endorse school shootings is something that belongs in the ashheap of history.

It is quite telling that the many people who condemned Donald Trump for a lack of civility or violating “norms and standards” have been silent about slanders like those from Murphy. If anything, those like Dan Gross, who purport to seek “common ground” when discussing Second Amendment issues, have been silent about the slanders.

Gross talked a good game this past spring in his open letter and in his speech in November 2019, I’ll admit. But where are the actions to back the talk? It’s been eight-plus months since the open letter. It’s been two years since the speech. Again, where is the action?

Murphy’s smear is also a chance for Doctor Oz, who announced his Senate candidacy, to show he means what he said as well. There is understandable skepticism of his support for the Second Amendment, given past comments, and he can alleviate concerns by slamming Murphy’s slander.

Ultimately, though, there is only one way to guarantee that the slander will abate to some degree: It needs to become politically toxic. Second Amendment supporters need to work hard to esnure the defeat of anti-Second Amendment extremists at the federal, state, and local levels via the ballot box as soon as possible.  In fact, in a way, we can even make the case we are standing for civility and decency.

Gun Banners Rush to Exploit MI School Shooting; Watch for New Demands

Screen snip shows law enforcement response to shooting at Oxford High School in Michigan. (YouTube, ABC News)

Michigan – -(AmmoLand.com)- Gun prohibitionists are moving swiftly to capitalize on the fatal school shooting in Oxford Township, Mich., that has now taken four students’ lives and left at least six other students and one adult, wounded, and the media now appears focused on how the 15-year-old suspect was armed with a pistol his father purchased just days before.

The suspect, identified as 15-year-old Ethan Crumbley, has been charged as an adult with 1 count of terrorism, four counts of first-degree murder, seven counts of assault with intent to commit murder and 12 counts of possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony, according to Oakland County Prosecutor Karen C. McDonald. During her remarks to the press, she called for additional gun control.

“If the incident yesterday of four children being murdered is not enough to revisit our gun laws, I don’t know what is,” she said.

Anti-gun U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) tweeted, “Driving home tonight, I thought about Republicans’ floor speeches today on the “sanctity of life”. And how this concern for ‘life’ apparently doesn’t extend to the kids who were shot today in a school in Michigan. So I turned the car around, and went to the Senate floor.”

There, he delivered remarks excoriating Senate Republicans for opposing gun bans, apparently without him doing any research on the facts of the tragic shooting.

“You care about life,” Murphy declared. “Then get these military-style weapons off the streets, out of our schools.”

But Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard had reportedly already identified the gun recovered by his deputies as a 9mm Sig Sauer SP2022 semi-auto, which carries a 15-round magazine. It is an exposed-hammer double-action/single-action pistol with a polymer frame, Nitron-finished stainless steel slide, night sights, not a “military-style weapon,”—whatever that might be—that Murphy and others want to ban.

Shannon Watts, founder and head of Moms Demand Action, the subsidiary of anti-gun billionaire Michael Bloomberg’s Everytown for Gun Safety, released an email blast, stating in part, “our volunteers are demanding urgent action from our elected leaders, engaging with voters to support gun safety at the ballot box, and organizing their own communities every single day to prevent more gun tragedies.”

Virtually every news agency is noting in their reports the pistol was purchased on “Black Friday”—the day after Thanksgiving—by the suspect’s father. Neither the teen suspect or his parents are speaking to investigators and the parents have reportedly hired an attorney. Investigators were still trying to establish a motive.

When the suspect surrendered to responding lawmen, the pistol still carried seven rounds in the magazine. At least one other magazine has been recovered.

One possible demand to watch for: A push for a federal waiting period on the delivery of any handgun, and a “safe storage” requirement.

A second effort might be a renewed push for arbitrary magazine capacity limits [IR 10 round New Jersey] on the heels of a federal appeals court ruling Tuesday upholding the state’s ban on so-called “large-scale ammunition magazines,” as reported by the Los Angeles Times. Responding officers reportedly recovered two 15-round pistol magazines at the Michigan high school.

Another possibility would be quick action by Michigan lawmakers on Senate Bills 550-553 and House Bills 5066-5069. According to Bridge Michigan, they’re among dozens of measures stuck in legislative gridlock at the capitol in Lansing.

The report says these measures “would require anyone who stores a firearm in an area accessible by a minor to either secure the gun with a locking device, store it in a lock box or keep it ‘in a location that a reasonable person would believe is secure.’ Failure to do so would be a felony punishable by up to five years in prison if a minor used the gun to injure or kill anyone, including themselves. The legislation would also exempt ‘firearm safety devices’ from the state’s 6 percent sales and use tax, reducing the total cost.”

Sponsors of the bills were identified as Senators Rosemary Bayer of Beverly Hills, Jeff Irwin of Ann Arbor, Stephanie Chang of Detroit and Mallory McMorrow of Royal Oak, and Reps. Felica Brabec of Pittsfield and Mari Manoogian of Birmingham.

It is already illegal for a minor to carry a concealed handgun in the state, and it is likewise illegal to carry a concealed pistol into a school.

Killed in the shooting were 16-year-old Tate Myre, 14-year-old Hana St. Juliana, and 17-year-old Madisyn Baldwin. Reports say Myre heroically tried to disarm the suspect, only to be fatally wounded. He died in a police car while an officer was rushing to reach a hospital. There is already a movement to name the high school’s football field in Myre’s honor, with a petition supporting the suggestion already carrying nearly 50,000 signatures.

On Wednesday, a fourth student identified as 15-year-old Justin Shilling, died at a hospital in Pontiac, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Oregon’s Anti-Gun Populace is Coming for your Guns – AGAIN!

Oregon NRA-ILA
Oregon’s anti-gun populace wants your guns, now! IMG NRA-ILA

U.S.A. -(AmmoLand.com)- Citizen petitioners have filed, and now begun to gather signatures, to take away your gun rights on the 2022 ballot:

Initiative Petition (IP) 17 seeks to:

    • Require you to obtain a permit to acquire a firearm
    • Create a firearm and permit database of your personal information maintained by state police
    • Ban ammunition magazines over 10 rounds

Initiative Petition (IP) 18 seeks to:

    • Ban semi-automatic firearms (includes more than 100 models of handguns, rifles, and shotguns & 10 generalized categories of semi-automatic firearms)

Despite recent data showing that guns being used in Portland’s rising crime rates are coming from 3 sources – stolen, straw purchases, and the underground market (all already illegal means) – these anti-gun citizens are coming after YOU, the law-abiding firearm owners of Oregon, and YOUR guns. They don’t care about the Constitution, your right to keep and bear arms, or your God-given right of self-defense. The NRA will stand with you to fight these blatant infringements on the Second Amendment!

Anti-gun petitioners are gathering signatures – DO NOT SIGN INITIATIVE PETITION 17 or 18!

Oregon’s initiative process allows citizens to propose laws or amendments to the state Constitution. Initiative petitioners must gather and submit a required number of signatures and, if reached, the initiative is placed on the ballot for voters to adopt or reject.

The NRA submitted comments opposing IP 17 and IP 18 to the Secretary of State and Oregon Attorney General. Recently, the Oregon Supreme Court denied the Oregon Firearms Federation’s court challenge to IP 17 and IP 18’s misleading ballot titles and summaries. This denial allows the initiative petitioners to begin collecting signatures in order to qualify the initiatives for consideration on the 2022 ballot. Petitioners must now gather 112,020 signatures for IP 17 and IP 18 to reach the ballot in 2022. They have not yet qualified for the ballot in 2022.

Additional information on the anti-gun initiative petitions:

IP 17 would require you to obtain a permit from local law enforcement in order to acquire a firearm. This permit would require you to complete an approved “safety” program. You must pay for this permit, and its only valid for 5 years. You may have to wait up to 30 days for this permit to be issued. IP 17 would also create a state police database of firearms and firearms permits. These permit requirements are in addition to current background check requirements. IP 17 also seeks to ban ammunition magazines over 10 rounds.

IP 18 would prohibit the manufacturing, possession, and transfer of listed semiautomatic firearms. Any currently owned firearms on the list must be registered or surrendered to police. Firearm dealers must remove the listed firearms from the state, or dispose of them. Commonly owned rifles, handguns, and shotguns are included on the list, found here:

Please, do NOT sign either petition and encourage your friends and family to refrain from signing the petitions as well.  The NRA will continue to monitor the status of signature gathering and keep our members updated.

Senate Democrats Try to Force Universal Background Check Bill, will GOP Fold?

Senate Democrats Try to Force Universal Background Check Bill, will GOP Fold? IMG iStock-924058482

WASHINGTON, D.C. -(Ammoland.com)- Today, 12/2/2021 Senate Democrats are expected to ram universal background checks (H.R. 8) through the Senate without even attempting to pass it through a vote.

The anti-gun Democrats in the Senate are planning on exploiting the tragic mass murder that took place at an Oakland County, Michigan high school to pull off their political stunt. Six students tragically lost their lives at the hands of a 15-year-old student when the teen opened fire on fellow students with his father’s handgun.

The father successfully PASSED a background check when he purchased his handgun used by the teen, which makes the move to push for universal background checks by anti-gun Senators even more puzzling.

The Democrats plan to use a procedural move called “unanimous consent” to bring the bill to the Senate floor without a vote. Democrats are planning to ask for unanimous consent from the Senate body.

If no Senators object to the request, then the bill passes without a vote.

It is a long shot that at least one “pro-gun” Republican will not object to the call for unanimous consent by Democrats. If one Senator does not agree to the call for unanimous consent, then the motion would end. Democrats know that the bill will probably not pass the Senate by unanimous consent. But by forcing Republicans to object to the universal background check bill right after a mass murder where the killer used a gun, they believe that they will win political points with voters.

This stunt is not about making schools safer for our children. It is about trying to hurt Republicans’ midterm elections chances.

In this November’s past election, Democrats took a beating across the board. In the bell-weather state of Virginia, Republicans won all three top state offices, replacing three anti-gun Democrats and taking back control of the House of Delegates. Even in the Democratic stronghold of New Jersey, Republicans made significant gains and almost won the Governor’s office. Even in far-left Seattle elected a Republican mayor. The amount of ground Republicans took from Democrats was historical, and the best is yet to come.

The Democrat’s plan for trying to pass universal background checks by unanimous consent didn’t come to light until late Wednesday. Some believe that the last-minute goal was kept under wraps to prevent the grassroots gun community from getting involved and flooding Senator’s inboxes and phone numbers. The anti-gun politicians want to dissuade as many Republican Senators as possible from standing up against their dirty tactics and make those who stand up look out of touch by playing on Americans’ emotions.

Gun Owners of America emailed out an emergency alert Wednesday night informing their members of the move by Senate Democrats. The NRA ILA and the Second Amendment Foundation both are monitoring the situation. Gun rights lobbyists are working behind the scenes to ensure that the ploy does not work.

Concerned gun owners can reach their Senator’s office by calling the Senate’s switchboard at 202-224-3121. Right now, time is of the essence. Even if your Senator is an anti-gun politician, you must make it known to them that using dead kids as political pawns is not okay, and you know what they are doing.
